2009 In My Rear View Mirror

This time last year our house was filled with friends and kids and as I remember the decibel level was off the charts.

Now it's just me, The Husband, and Miss Bessie watching TV in the loft.  We did have a dinner at a neighbors tonight after both of us worked all day. But it was one of those couples with toddlers or babies on the way gatherings.............and you can only take so much conversation about diaper brands.

The Husband will head to work in the morning...............so it's off to sleep soon.  Or more accurately, he will go to sleep and I will listen to Dick Clark at low volume.

Currently, he's watching the Three Stooges................what is it about men liking them????   OMG ............AMC channel is a Stooges marathon.  Get me a sleeping pill right now!!!!  I hate the Stooges.  They ARE NOT FUNNY.  Ya I know, it's a male/female thing.

I think that all over the world, there are people having glamorous, fabulous New Year's Eve celebrations.  It's a new decade soon..............and I'm perfectly content to spend this night it my very own house, in the best state in the Union, in the best country in the world, with my wonderful The Husband.

But I do miss the ScooterGirl and The Marine.....................

So Cheers and Happy New Year to family, friends and all those who stop by my little blog from time to time.

God Bless and may 2010 be full of love and peace joy.

Christmas 2009

Like just about all of 2009, Christmas 2009 was not the norm.  Though this year we did get the much longed for (by me) White Christmas.

The Husband is on a day shift this year.  So he worked all day Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  He doesn't get home till 7:30 or later, and has to be up early the next day.

So my family completely changed the schedule and we pretended yesterday was Christmas..........

So Christmas Dinner was at my Mom and Dad's yesterday..........turkey, Bronco football (let's not talk about it) and my Mom's famous Grab Bags...............a grown up version of the Christmas Stocking........where she fills a huge gift bag with odds and ends that she has been shopping for and saving LITERALLY all year.

There's never any way to predict what will find it's way into the Grab Bag..............from candles to super glue, anything is possible.  Each year there's something that makes us laugh...........this year the winner had to be the NASCAR ballpoint pen that lights up.  Heaven knows I'm a huge NASCAR fan........... :o

So Christmas came two days late................on the 25th I spent the day with Miss Bessie and endless holiday movies on TV.  A little different this year but still a Merry Christmas.

Robin Hood? The Movie?

This has my name written all over it...................

2009 Christmas Candy Giveaway

On a whim last year, full of Christmas Spirit, I handed the Starbucks drive-through-guy a few pieces of candy from a bag I had bought for the office.

He was so happy and appreciative, it got me to thinking.

So I bought an extra bag, put it in my car and always made sure I had a few in my pocket and starting handing them out.

So Monday began the 2009 campaign.  Last year was such fun so I decided to stick with the same candy.....................

It's amazing how such a simple gesture brings such surprise, happiness and joy to people.  Had a business meeting at a local Starbucks this afternoon and the Barista told me it was the first Merry Christmas anyone had said to him..............and when he saw the candy.......he said, "Wow!  I remember these from when I was a kid".

Grab a bag.................hand them out................you'll see what I mean.

Joel, The New Kitty

Ahhhhhhhhhhh

Nice to spend the evening with Deputy Chief Brenda Lee Johnson.........(and The Husband says he's also fond of Chief Pope).

Guess we'll only get a few new episodes of "The Closer".  Kind of a Christmas present of sorts..........

And "Men of a Certain Age" was pretty good too!  The Husband laughed more than me.....it's a guy thing.

Winter Woes

The only thing worse than a winter cold is a summer cold...................

So I guess I shouldn't complain about a winter one.

Been fighting it all week...............this one was of the sore throat variety.............and why does a sore throat always get so bad at night when you're trying to sleep?

I'm on the back end of this one.............and that means my voice will go.  Been plauged with bad vocal cords all my life.  My throat dries out for various reasons, colds being only one reason.  I remember in my youth pastor/yelling at teenagers days, my doctor told me I was going to lose my voice permanently if I didn't rest it.  These days I don't mind being quiet and shrugging my shoulders.

They're BAAAck..........The Closer, that is............

A week from tomorrow night they're back..................for just 3 episodes.................

Best show on TV.

The UnTurkey Thanksgiving

No, not because we have become vegans or something like that.

I'm pretty sure this is the first time in my life when I haven't been with family on Thanksgiving.

In the past it has always been shared with my Mom's family.  Last year was Mom and Dad's 50th Wedding Anniversary.

But with The Husband's work schedule and other issues, there was no big gathering.

After a day spent alone...............I went to the neighbors for a few hours.

Bless her heart, she's not exactly a chef............while trying to baste her turkey in the oven with a stick of butter......(??????) it fell over and.............well.........let's just say there was enough smoke in the house for coughing and alarms.

Meanwhile the dogs and kids and were hitting decibels beyond belief...............

When dinner was on the plates............I don't remember what it tasted like.........too much mayhem

There was supposed to be a "redo" with Parents, Lil Bro and The Husband tomorrow, but Lil Bro is sick and so we will reschedule.

With The Husband at work the last three days........................I was bored.

But my Christmas decor is well on it's way.....

But....................I need my turkey.............I love turkey.

Thanksgiving Travel

When I think Thankgiving long weekend, I think about how thankful I am that I never have to endure holiday travel.

It's enough to experience it vicariously through this Classic...............

Dancing With the Stars - Results

"What do you think of the season as a whole?"

That's what The Husband asked me.

Slow start..........................good finish.

That's what I think.

To begin with................as a child of the 70's..............

Donnie is the man.  Though he wasn't at the top of my heart throb list.........he was on it, and he was just so...........nice.

On the extreme far end..............Kelly Osborne comes from the drugged out.....burned out parents of the 70's rock movement.  If you ever watched the Osbornes reality show........you understand what she is coming from.  Kelly is the Redemption story.  She makes me want to root for her.................and I think Lynn agrees.

Mya................well she has the most direct experience, and she is by nature, the best dancer.

But as we all know, the best dancer doesn't always win.

For the first time...........whoever wins is okay by me.

Mya...............the best dancer................

Donnie............the Entertainer.............the heartthrob peer of mine..................

Kelly................the girl who found a new life for herself and a new SELF.

Who should win?????????????????

On paper...................Mya

In reality................................

The winner is.............

not Kelly............

Not Mya..................

DONNIE OSMOND.................................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Young Love...............first love...................

filled....................with deep devotion......................

Meet the Girl

Oh the trial and tribulations of bringing a furry friend into your home.

Ups and downs, but mostly ups................

She is the hit of the neighborhood.................all the folks with psycho dogs want to trade.

World Wide Web....................meet Bessy.

She is a Colorado dog............

She likes the snow as much as I do.

She is a sweety girl.  And yes, ScooterGirl, you are going to love her.

I will tell the "tail" of how Miss Bessy came to live with us.

I ask her everyday....................."Are you a dog or an angel?"

One more photo.

The Catch Up Post

Been preoccupied for a few weeks.................reasons to follow.  So to catch up........here's some "things".

Happy with the final three on Dancing With the Stars.  I am usually thoroughly annoyed when people who are not as good dancers hang on, only because of their popularity with the fans.  In a case of  complete opinion reversal.  I'm glad Mya, (clearly the best dancer, and deserves to win) Donnie (can we call him Don now? He's my age!) and Kelly (the surprise of the season) are the three for the finals.

Joanne (who is this chick) was clearly a better dancer than Kelly or Donnie but.................who is this chick?

Looking forward to the finals.

Since we last spoke (posted) we've had yet another November snow storm.  This one hit last weekend and we got about six inches.  Still hasn't melted yet.  We are way up for the year and month.  Harbinger of things to come?

I got a new camera, because I had dropped the previous one so many times in 4 years that it gave up the ghost.  Still learning the ins and outs of the new one, but photos to follow.

It's Birthday month in The Chick's family.  Mom and little Bro have November b-days and so does Dad.  Throw in Thanksgiving and parent's anniversary...........the Hallmark people are raking it in right before
Christmas.

AND..........the source of all the preoccupation..................

The Husband finally got his wish.....................

We have acquired a ........................dog.  Yes, I can hear both the groans and cheers all the way here.  I don't think a week has gone by since our wedding 7 years ago when The Husband has not mentioned getting a dog.  And yes, we had a disastrous month a few years ago with a pound  black lab who was "She Who Must Not Be Named."

This time has been infinitely better, but not without it's bumps.

So.................photos will follow of our new furry companion..................Bessy.

Happy Birthday Marines

November 10th is the Birthday of the Marine Corp.  Being married to one causes you to take note of such things.

Over at Big Hollywood, there is a post about the 10 best Marine movies of all time.  Don't know if I agree with the list..............but here it is.

Dancing With the Stars - Update - Gossip

I haven't posted each week about the Dancing With the Stars shows.  For some reason, overall, this season seems less interesting than previous seasons.  Still watching every week around here.

It seems highly likely that Mya will win if it came down to sheer dancing abilities, but that's not what it comes down to each season.

On the like ability level, I can't help but favor Donnie Osmond, who was in all those Tiger Beat magazines I read at age 11.  Though I was a Bobby Sherman girl myself, I remember clipping a few pages with pictures of Donnie and adding them to the wall that Mom let me hang such things on.  He is by far the best entertainer and as a fellow over "50-er" I can't imagine how he keeps this pace up.  Let's hear it for squeaky clean types, GO DONNIE!

The surprise of the season as far as I'm concerned is Kelly Osbourne.  Since you don't choose who your parents are, she had a tough go of it since day one, being the daughter of the Prince of Darkness and all.  With their reality show, all of America got to witness first hand the mayhem that was the The Osbournes.  The former youth pastor in me, wants to believe this has been good experience for Kelly to be on the show, and when she lets go, she does surprisingly well.  I loved it when she danced to her Dad's song.

On the celebrities I could care less about front, it's a big tie between Could I Be Less Likeable Aaron Carter, and Joanna Who Is This Chick Krupa.  Clearly the only thing saving these two are their partners and maybe Joanna's outfits.  By the way.................WHO is she?

Anyway, now it gets interesting................

Drip, Drip, Drip

MELTING...................

We are melting here.........

This is the heavy Colorado snow we all know and love......................snow, snow, snow............

Next day............sun.............melting.

And driving home tonight we were all treated to the Denver phenomenon known as the Denver Bronco Sunset.

As the bumper stickers say, "If God Doesn't Love the Broncos, Why Are Sunsets Orange and Blue?"

Halloween Snow In Colorado

I promised the ScooterGirl and The Marine some photos of the nationally renowned "Pre-Halloween Blizzard of '09."  You know it's bad  or people want you to think it's bad, when Sam Champion from Good Morning America is doing his weather report from Denver.

So here's the photographic evidence.

Note the poor Mr. Finch hanging on by his tiny feet to get a few seeds.  These Colorado birds are a hardy lot!!

I'm snug in my Denver office.  More Halloween snow fun to follow!!!

Grey Today, White Tomorrow

It's coming .................or so they are telling us.  As I write this.........the rain turned to snow about an hour ago.  They are talking snow through Thursday night..............but maybe the 50's by Saturday.  Which would be great for the trick or treaters.  It's fall in Colorado which means just about anything can happen with the weather.  4 inches to 24 inches.  Which will it be???

Updates to follow.

Oh, by the way................I love the snow.

Get in the Middle of The Middle

I love this show.

Wednesday night is the night for one of the most creative and funny new sitcoms I've seen in a long time.

I don't "do" sitcoms.  Not really.  Not since Seinfeld went off the air have I been a fan of a sitcom.  "Rules of Engagement"  was funny but not nearly as good.

Now this little show comes along, and while Modern Family is getting all the press, I think this show is the gem.  The basic plot is a Middle America Family.  Dad and Mom both work, three kids, two of which are teenagers and the youngest, "Brick" is the joy of the family.

From the show's website, they describe him.

"Brick is the youngest child of Frankie and Mike Heck. He's known both in the household and out for some, let's say odd behavior—his best friend is his backpack—but that doesn't mean that he can't pull it together when he needs to in order to help his mom make a sale. While he might be the strangest among his older brother Axl and his older sister Sue, we can't help but love the little guy, and we're sure you will too."

Anyway, I love this show.  It's funny, offbeat, quirky, and somehow............dead on. No doubt they will cancel it  So head over to ABC.com and watch the episodes online while you still can. (while you still can).

For Conservative Movie Lovers

Please watch the video below.

If you click on the video twice and watch it over at YouTube you can see it in widescreen.

Now go read this post over at Big Hollywood (an amazing blog you should be reading everyday).

For Conservative Movie Lovers

This sounds like an amazing concept, and if its a good as the rest of the material over at Big Hollywood, it's sure to be fascinating.

What I love about Big Hollywood is the creativity, the range of topics and the concept that our pop culture is extremely important to welfare of our nation.  Pop culture, (movies, music, TV and the like) are both a reflection and an influence on our nation.

Ahhhhhhhhhh.....wander around Big Hollywood and see what I mean.

Pagan Christianity Review (Finally)

Well, well well. I realize everyone else read this book several years ago. Frank Viola doesn't just upset the apple cart, he chops the cart into kindling and makes applesauce with the apples. Being the closet Heretic I am, I have to say I think he's on the money. THERE! I said it.  This book reinforced so many issues I uncovered nearly 20 years ago, while on staff at a large church.  I finished it this week and handed it off to a dear friend to read just yesterday.  On to more of his books................

More Dancing With the Stars Maksim All the Time

So I haven't posted much about Dancing With The Stars lately.   But we never miss a moment here at Casa Rancho.  A house favorite this season is, surprisingly.......Kelly Osbourne.

But in the interest of "giving them what they want".  The most Googled search that brings people to my little blog these days are people looking for pictures of Maksim.

Since he's out of the running, here's few shots.

Hey!!! All you Maks fans.  Stick around and read the rest while you're here.

Meanwhile...................

MAKSIM for everyone!!!!!

Best Movie Lines - Apollo 13

How many times have I watched Apollo 13?  Can't keep track.  I love this film.

I have an emotional connection to this movie for two important reasons.

One, my father was a rocket scientist.  Yep, he worked for Martin Marietta in the 60's.  Childhood was filled with early morning or late night viewings of each and everything they ever broadcast about the Mercury and Apollo missions.  It's in my DNA.  I'm still  obsessed.

Two, I met Jim Lovell.  In my industry I have the opportunity to meet many high profile people.  Politicians, Athletes, Musicians, and all the other Celebrity types.

Only once have I EVER asked to have my picture taken.........that happened when I met Jim Lovell.  I asked for, and posed for, a picture with Jim Lovell.  How often do you get to meet an Apollo astronaut?  (I think, as we speak, that photo is on my Dad's desk).  I was impressed to meet Jim Lovell.

So I watch Apollo 13 whenever I see it on the guide.  And yes, I always cry.

But my favorite line in the movie is when Marilyn Lovell is trying to distract her mother-in-law, while the TV reports are coming in about the precarious situation.  She introduces her to Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Marilyn Lovell: Blanche, Blanche, these nice young men are going to watch the television with you. This is Neil Armstrong, and this is Buzz... Aldrin.

Neil Armstrong: Hi.

Blanche Lovell: Are you boys in the space program too?

If that's not funny to you, go research the Space Program.

So many great things to be found online on this subject.

See what I found .................BBC's coverage.  Note the anchor with his finger's crossed.

Cold in Colorado

A day of winter in the middle of fall.  It's frozen out there.  No Colorado Rockies Baseball tonight.  Thought I'd get some shopping in today, but after a quick trip to Birdland to fill the feeder, I decided to stay inside today.

And yes, they are calling for 60's later this week.

Recently checked out a classic car show and snapped these of some of the best.  If we had a bigger garage.............

Can I get one of these Mustangs????

Pepper Peeling Day

You know it's really fall at Casa Rancho when it's pepper peeling day.

Today was that day.

A bushel of fresh Anaheim peppers, grown up in Brighton got peeled and packed into freezer bags.

A bushel makes about 30 bags of 6-8 peppers a piece.

We saved out some for tonight's meal.

These will become Chile Rellenos.  I put a small slit near the stem, clean the seeds out, and fill with jack cheese cut in strips...............

If they split to much, I add toothpicks to hold them together.  Then I pop the pan in the freezer.  After a few hours, the are frozen solid and easier to handle.

After dipping in a egg bath, they go into the skillet.

Today was a great treat because The Husband whipped up a batch of pork green chili, with the last of the peppers from last year.

A little sour cream on top............Really good stuff.  We had a nice meal and fed the neighbors as well!

If you're coming to Casa Rancho..............let me know...........I'll whip you up a batch!

Sirius Satellite never fails to hit the spot.  Quick run to get an iced tea, looking at the fall colors starting to pop around town.

Channel 3 the "LOVE" channel whips out this little ditty...........................

I sing along really well.

Altitude 6200 Feet

A reader asked me in an email why my blog says "Random Thoughts From 6200 Feet."

Most people have heard Denver called the Mile High City which would put us at 5280 Feet.  And in fact there is a marker (or a few of them) at the State Capitol.

So why 6200 feet?  Well when the amazing, time wasting, Google Earth came out.............I was able to ascertain that good old Casa Rancho is actually a nearly full 1000 feet higher than downtown.  I assumed it was higher, but didn't know it was that much higher.  As you head south out of town you are gradually climbing up towards the Palmer Divide.

For you out-of-staters................knowing the elevation of wherever you are is a "Colorado Thing".  When you travel around the state you constantly hear people asking or referring to the elevation of their location.

There you go.

More useless info from your host.

Over to Ouray - Rewind

This year was our 7th year in a row to head to Ouray.  In between we have also been in other great Colorado locales, like Estes Park, Leadville, Keystone, Buena Vista, and all the little places in between.

But I doubt we will find a spot we like as well.  There is amazing scenery all over this wonderful state.  But if you haven't seen the San Juans, you haven't seen the best of the Colorado.

Ouray somehow, remains little changed since the first time I visited in the late 80's.  There's a certain comfort in that.

So a few more pictures from our trip.

Good to go, good to come home.

Oh, and I haven't forgotten about that post about Hutch.........................
